Adorning the Dark

I remember the first time I heard the music of Andrew Peterson. Ben and I were newlyweds, sitting around a table in a one-bedroom apartment, talking about life and ministry with our friends.
.

The soothing music was playing in the background of our conversation, singing about the very things we were discussing - growing into adulthood, calling, starting a family. His music was folky, and the lyrics resonated with our changing season of life.
.

I confess I’ve had trouble making it through a book on the craft of writing. But this one is different. Andrew shares not only tips for writers, musicians and artists (“Write it like you would say it”)... but also shares the story of his own life. It’s personal, humble and engaging.
.

I found myself resonating with much of his story, both as a writer and as a child of the nineties (the thrill of walking into Waldenbooks with money in my pocket!) I’m encouraged to keep writing and reflecting on all that’s good, true and beautiful. Andrew helps us to see writing , or any creative art, as an act of worship.
.

“Sometimes you have to do the work even if you don’t feel like it. Sometimes you have to put away your wants and do what needs to be done, which really means dying to self in order to find life. This is a way of practicing resurrection.”
